 Truth

John 8:31 Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Henry Augustus Rowland, professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University, was once called as an expert witness at a trial. During cross-examination a lawyer demanded, “What are your qualifications as an expert witness in this case?”

The normally modest and retiring professor replied quietly, “I am the greatest living expert on the subject under discussion.” Later a friend well acquainted with Rowland’s disposition expressed surprise at the professor’s uncharacteristic answer. Rowland answered, “Well, what did you expect me to do? I was under oath.”

Many of the teachings and sayings of Jesus if said by anyone else would come off as bragging. In fact in in the Book of John he makes seven bold statements that if said by anyone else they would be scoffed as a lunatic or worse a braggart.

In John 6:35 he said  I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

In John 8:12 he said I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.

In John 10:7 Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

In John10:11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

InJohn 11:25 I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live…”

John 14:6is one of his boldest statements concerning himself I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

And finally, inJohn 15:5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing

Jesus’, “I am,” statements would be boastful if stated by any other person, but we need to remember these are not are not intended to be received as mere intellectual knowledge. Rather, they should motivate us to worship Jesus for who he is. They reveal his glorious character to us.
He is the bread that satisfies our deepest longings.
He is the light that shines on the path of righteousness.
He is the door into the people of God.
He is the good Shepherd who cares for the people of God. He is our hope of a resurrection.
He is the only way to God.
He is the vine through which we experience the power of God.

That is Truth.

Prayer:  Dear God help us to receive Jesus as he is the I Am that supplies our every need through his glorious character.
