Right or Righteousness

  Psalm 23:1-3 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake. (NKJV)
I Thessalonians 5:18,19 Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit.
    There are a few verses of Scripture that are almost universally known by believers and unbelievers.  John 3:16 of course, Matthew 6:9-13 (The Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23. Most commonly this is quoted from the King James Version, and rightly so.  The beauty and rhythm of these verses are so soothing.
  The New International version quotes verse three as “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Which I like as well, but perhaps my favorite translation is from the New Living Translation.  It reads “He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” They all convey the same message but the issue for most modern people is that first of all we really don’t understand the word righteousness.  To us it means not doing certain things that are considered “unholy” and doing other things that are considered “holy.”  So, we start making lists and of course everyone’s list differs from every other list.
    Secondly, what in the world does “For his name’s sake mean.  To me a name sake is someone who is named after a person.  I have known a lot of sons named after their father but many times those two people were far apart in characteristics, traits and in many cases, character.
   But in the New Living Translation it tells us that the Good Shepherd is going to guide us down the correct or right paths in order that we might bring honor to His name.  You see he does leave us to sit at a crossroad trying to decide which is the right way to go but rather through His Word and His Spirit he guides or directs us in our direction. So we can honor his name. It is His path that is righteous, not our actions.
  Prayer: Dear God thank you for your guidance in our paths, help us to allow ourselves to be directed by your Spirit in all things.
